This is not simply a home designed by an architect for a client. We are building the architect's own home. Our client is an established architect whose work extends across the UK and internationally. To be selected and trusted to turn his own vision into reality is something we take extremely seriously. When the person responsible for the design is also the person who will ultimately live in the finished building, every junction, every material and every detail matters. The house has been designed around Passive House principles, combining an exceptionally high-performance and airtight building envelope with mechanical ventilation, underfloor heating, solar PV and carefully considered low-energy systems to create a home that will deliver outstanding comfort and efficiency throughout the year. The architectural design is equally impressive. A dramatic pitched form will be finished with standing-seam zinc cladding to the roof and elevations, complemented by Accoya timber cladding to the gables and carefully selected natural stonework. Large areas of glazing are fundamental to the design, flooding the dramatic double-height internal spaces with natural light and creating a strong connection between the house and its Derbyshire surroundings. Behind the finished architecture is an enormous amount of technical detailing. The timber-frame structure, airtightness strategy, insulation, junctions, penetrations, windows, cladding and interfaces all have to work together. On a building of this performance level, the details that eventually disappear behind the finished surfaces are every bit as important as the ones you can see. That is where our role as the principal contractor becomes particularly important. Working closely with the architect and specialist trades, our responsibility is to take an ambitious architectural design and deliver it properly on site without compromising either the architecture or the performance of the building. We will leave no stone unturned in achieving the standard this house deserves. Once complete, this will be a truly individual home, combining Passive House performance, contemporary architecture, natural materials and exceptional craftsmanship. We have no doubt it will turn heads, but more importantly, it will perform every bit as well as it looks.
